About 'The Enchanted Garden'

'The Enchanted Garden 2022' is an international art exhibition in a structured, natural landscape garden full of water and contrasts. It is located on the language border, between Jodoigne, Hoegaarden and Tienen, halfway between Brussels and Liège and on the 'RAVEL' cycle route connecting Tienen, Hoegaarden with Jodoigne and Namur.

In 2022, we also welcome artists from Burkina Faso, the Philippines, Singapore, ... About fifty sculptors take part. You will see sculptures in glass, wood, bronze, ceramics, metal, recycled material and stone.

In this International Year of Glass, some well-known glass artists are taking part for the first time. We only mention:

Annemarie van Uden (NL): combines colours in delicate structures, both abstract and figurative.
B. Jane Cowie (Singapore): was inspired by the "weeds" in "The Enchanted Garden" to create beautiful, two-metre high glass sculptures with LED light that are suitable for private gardens as well as in urban landscapes, such as in Singapore.
Marc Hadermann (BE) let some fifty snowdrops in glass and ceramics grow into the trees.
Maurice La Rooy (NL, BE) was inspired by the end of the lockdown and life with two totally different series 'When Spring Comes' and 'MoMonto-Mori', but both are outstanding in technical, aesthetic and artistic terms.

You will be surprised at the many possibilities that glass can offer. The many different glass techniques make it possible to create interesting and unique works. The play of light and shadow adds an extra dimension to glass works, and glassworks can be less fragile than ceramics!

Glass art only reaches its full potential in dialogue with artworks in other materials. Many works of art also make use of recycled materials, such as the works made by:

Abou Sidibé (BF) tells stories with recuperated wooden household objects and decorative objects in bronze.
Adje Martens (NL), only the surface of his garden restricts his imagination.
France Van Hemelrijck (BE), used to make wedding dresses. Today, she makes elegant birds from agricultural tools.
Ludo Giels and Lut De Baere (BE), from a sunken and exploded barge to a wonderful world full of unusual characters.

So it will be an eclectic exhibition for the ninth time.

At least half of the visitors come for the garden with its many facets, such as ponds, brooks, meadows, woods, the 'Secret Garden', labyrinth, terraces, rose hedges and the numerous benches to relax with a view on the countryside of Haspengouw. There are no exotic plants, no 'cultivars', but a rich variety of indigenous, spontaneously grown wild plants (wild orchid in abundance).
It is not for nothing that it is called a structured, natural, water-rich landscape garden full of contrasts.

A visit to 'The Enchanted Garden' combined with the assets of Brabant's Haspengouw and Jodoigne will certainly pleasantly surprise you.

The neighbours ask our visitors to use the large car park located 400 m from the exhibition, along the Ravel. A short, pleasant walk in the shade of the trees will lead you to the exhibition (parking address: Rue Saint-Marie 1, 1370 Saint-Jean-Geest).

News

Preparation for the 10th 'The Enchanted Garden' in 2023 started

In 2023 Art Sanctuary organizes the festive 10th edition of the International Art Exhibition 'The Enchanted Garden'. The preparations started with the selection of artists from all corners of the world. The working theme is "(E)motion". We're discussing with artists about their motivations, proposals, statements regarding the exhibition:

Anmarie Léon (France; Totems; Métal, Récupération): Voici ma démarche artistique : La crise de la covid a fait émerger une attente profonde, changer le monde, la société. Il faut donc que nous changions nous même. Ca concerne l’economie circulaire, un état d’esprit qui va devenir de plus en plus à la mode: l’upcycling.
Annie Ross (United Kingdom, England; Member of the 'Contemporary Glass Society'; Installation with glaspanels telling a story; Glass): I recently completed an installation after having done a “pilgrimage” from Dover to Canterbury Cathedral. I am not religious, but the piece was made with travelling, journey, movement and challenge in mind. Dover is the port where many migrant travellers land. The theme was to represent and mirror displacement.
Bert Schoeren (Nederland; Kinetic Sculptures; Glas, Metaal): Ik maak kinetische bloemenvelden en ik denk dat mijn werk uitstekend past; Ik werk veel met kunststof acrylic glass, en bevat reflectie, transparantie en kleur.
Brigitte de Callataÿ (Belgique; Personnages; Céramique, Bronze): Mon travail est principalement basé sur la terre et le bronze, et sur les émotions que procurent les expressions de mes sujets.
Christian Lagrange (Belgique; Illustrateur, Décorateur de théâtre; Mythologies forestières; Céramique): Des arbres qui prennent des visages, racontent des histoires.
Christien Dutoit (België; Figuren; Keramiek, Brons): In mijn werk staat “De Mens” centraal. Mijn eigen visie op het leven en wat de mensen ervaren zijn de belangrijkste motieven in mijn werk.
Daniella Rubinovitz (Nederland; Natuur; Brons, Metaal): Ik maak sculpturen die een wisselwerking aangaan met de natuurlijke omgeving zodat bezoekers de werkelijkheid herdenken. Kijkend naar de beelden van de betoverende tuin, geniet ik van de intieme setting van uw prachtige omgeving. Het voelt betoverend. Ik dacht hoe mooi is het om dit werk ("Bronze Butterfly") te exposeren, in de lente. De natuurlijke tijd waarin veel vlinders tevoorschijn komen na hun enorme metamorfose.
Ellen Rijsdorp (Nederland; Aaibare beelden; Keramiek): Mijn keramiek is inderdaad heel aaibaar en wordt deel van de natuur als het buiten staat. De windflowers waaien met de wind mee. De grotere objecten kunnen direct in de tuin geplaatst worden of op een sokkel.
Emma White (United Kingdom; Member of "Contemporary Glass Society"; Glass): I create glass art because I love working with hot glass. Personally that is the only time where, what I call the white noise of life simply all falls away. Pure focus and I'm in my element. I feel that the glasswork I create often reflects that. Because that is what I want for the individual is looking at my pieces. I want them to be able to lose themselves. To take a moment, to stop, to breathe, and focus on the inside of the glass work. Because we're all so busy rushing around in this insane world. We need visual reminders to stop and take that moment.
Gundula Menking (Deutschland; Stories; Glass): The series "Ark Types", which expresses how people travel in life, alone, in pairs, or many in a boat - but ultimately all under the same sky. The series "Sons and Daughters of the Earth" is about the relationship between humans, animals and nature. I got the audience award in Munster for this work.
Hans Vroom (Nederland; Hout,Epoxy): Wat ik doe is een materiaal uit de natuur halen, bewerken en terug in de natuur zetten, in jullie tentoonstelling. Hout is prachtig en is kunst op zichzelf. Ik verwerk er epoxy in zodat het een contrast vormt tussen ruw en glad, natuur en industrieel, bewerkt en onbewerkt, licht en donker, goed en kwaad.
Helen Hancock (United Kingdom, Northern Ireland; Nature, Mother-child; Glass): The work I would like to exhibit as part of The Enchanted Garden represents a hanging house plant made entirely from coloured, blown glass, with multiple elements suspended around and from each other. It explores the show theme of Emotion through its depiction of nature and plants in particular as something fragile that must be protected. ... The outdoor location will add movement to the suspended piece, and sunlight will refract through it, illuminating the colours infused into each element, not just green, but yellow, red and brown.
Henny Korten (Nederland; Stadsgezichten; Metaal, Recup)
Heren4 (Nederland; Installaties; Hout, Keramiek, Metaal, ...)
Hilde de Rooij (Nederland; Breekbaar licht; Glas en andere materialen): Ik zou willen deelnemen met mijn vliegende tapijten ... Bij voorkeur september/oktober; deze tapijtjes komen prima uit, vanwege de prachtige oranje tinten, in een tuin in herfstkleuren ... De tapijtjes zijn een soort weefsels van glas, en daardoor beweegbaar. Ze wiegen ook een beetje in de wind.
Janneke Bruines (Nederland; Vrouwen met een glimlach; Keramiek): Ik maak speelse vrouwfiguren van klei. Spannend, kleurig en een beetje sexy maar zeker ook met een diepere betekenis. Ze zijn uitdagelijk en zelfverzekerd maar vermijden oogcontact. Ze zijn er om bekeken te worden; van zichzelf geven ze niets prijs dan hun kleurige uiterlijk
Leen Kessels (Nederland; Weergevenvan transformaties; Steen): Mijn beelden gaan sowieso over ontwikkeling, verandering en transformatie.
Maarten Vaessen (België; Abstract, Organisch, Personage; Metaal): Hij maakt op expressieve wijze ijzeren roestsculpturen. Hij heeft geen specifieke kunstopleiding gevolgd, hij doet toch niet wat de leraar zegt. Kenmerkend voor Maarten’s werk zijn onafgewerkte lasnaden, lasspetters en ook deuken vindt hij niet erg.
Maria Pechstein & Haymo Aletsee (Deutschland; Mitglied Berufsverband Bildender Künstler Schwaben-Süd; Glas, Metall, Holz, ...): 1986: Bayerischer Staatspreis
Martine Souren (Belgique; Histoires; Céramique): Mes pots ne servent à rien mais ils racontent des histoires. Sur leurs panses, des personnages de légendes se penchent, échangent des regards, bondissent ou se perchent la tête en bas. Mes pots ne contiennent que de l’humour, de l’émotion et les traces de mon travail. Mes personnages, à ma propre surprise, existent vraiment et interpellent celui qui veut voir
Raf Roefflaer (België; Captain Bebop's vertellingen; Allerlei materialen): De wereld van Captain Bebop, alter ego voor vormgever Raf Roefflaer, wordt bewoond door talloze vreemde, maar ook herkenbare figuren en wezens die de toeschouwer meenemen in hun verhaal en je zo binnenloodsen in een bizar maar toch relevant schouwspel.
Sabine Nein (Deutschland; Mitglied Glaskünstlervereinigung Glasheimat Bayern; Abstract; Glass, Metall, Stein): Mein Thema sind oft Gegensätze, was auch die Wahl meiner Materialien (Metall, Holz, Stein oder Beton) betrifft. Das Herz jeder Arbeit ist aber immer das Glas, ob geschliffen, gestrahlt oder geklebt. Es ist mir wichtig, dass der Glasschliff seinen verdienten Platz in der Glaskunst hat, denn geschliffenes Glas ist zeitlos, ausdrucksstark und manchmal darfs auch witzig sein!
Stan Jankowski (United kingdom, Wales; Kinetic sculptures; Metal): Specializing in the age-old art of copper and brass weathervanes and kinetic wind sculpture design and construction
Véronique Kalitventzeff (Belgique; Femmes; Bronze, Céramique): Le mouvement est très important pour moi, il est suggéré par l'attitude mais aussi les muscles et drapés, dans le cas des arceaux, également par le socle qui fait partie de l'oeuvre. L'émotion est omniprésente. C'est pour moi la plus belle chose qu'une oeuvre puisse donner au spectateur ou acheteur. C'est en quelque sorte ma mission.
Yaron Meyer (Israel, United Kingdom; Member of Contemporary Glass Society; Glassblower & Designer, Glass lampworker, Blacksmith, Welder and more; Nature; Glass): I'm in love with glass and nature, my main artwork is about nature and glass and the beauty in nature.

'The Enchanted Garden' in autumn colours till sunday 09 Oct. 2022

For the first time, you can visit the international art exhibition 'The Enchanted Garden' during the autumn season. It shows sculptures in a natural landscape garden full of contrasts, surprises and autumn colours.

The exhibition presents some four hundred sculptures combining bronze, corten steel, composite, glass, ceramic, metal, reused materials and tools.

Among the artists, we mention:

Evelyne Hamoir (Belgium; bronze): Capturing instant images to express a state of mind, a volatile moment, an emotion.
France Van Hemelrijck (Belgium; recycled agricultural tools): Her imagination is limited only by the elegance of the creation.
Hermine van der Does (Netherlands; glass): Three-dimensional glass structures with brilliant colour combinations.
Mag Vermeiren (Belgium; bronze and ceramic): tender and poetic works full of detail; with the woman at the centre.
Paul Van Cauteren (Belgium; Glass): Abstract glass sculptures created from fused glass and glass colour powders, sometimes in combination with other materials.
Philippe Stévenart (Belgium; Corten steel, metal): A form of meditation where the viewer is invited to join the artist on his journey.

Some artists and artworks from the summer exhibition will no longer be present.

''The Enchanted Garden 2022' is located on the language border, between Jodoigne, Hoegaarden and Tienen, halfway between Brussels, Liège and Namur and on the 'RAVEL' cycle route connecting Leuven, Tienen, Hoegaarden with Jodoigne and Namur.

The exhibition is open on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 7pm till and including Sunday 09 Oct 2022. The entrance fee is 6 EUR / person. Drinks are available at the bar starting at 2 EUR.

The glass flowers from B.Jane Cowie are ready to leave Singapore for Belgium.

She has completed the eighteen flowers over 2 metres high for display at the international art exhibition in 'The Enchanted Garden' (Jodoigne, Belgium, halfway between Brussels and Liège).
They are made from recycled metal and glass and illuminated by LEDs.
At the end of this week they will be shipped to Belgium. We are crossing our fingers!
